In addition, he was selected for a 2 year fellowship program through the RCOG, London, in minimal access gynaecological surgery (keyhole surgery). He is accredited to perform the most complex keyhole surgeries (Level 5/6) in Australia.
Dr Rowlands performs all of his surgeries using contemporary minimal access techniques, facilitating speedy post-operative recovery.
He also undertook a 2 year fellowship program in Gynaecological Oncology in the UK, culminating in Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh, in gynaecological/pelvic surgery. This is a very rare qualification amongst gynaecologists. He is well versed in open gynaecological surgery and vaginal surgery. Dr Rowlands is a member of the British Society of Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology.
Following immigration to Australia, he was awarded FRANZCOG (Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists), and more recently, in recognition of his services/contribution to the specialty of O&G, was recommended and awarded the Fellowship of the London College. He has attended both national and international courses on managing intra-operative pelvic surgical complications and is competent to deal with these himself.
He received extensive professional training in high risk obstetrics provision, being fully competent in all forms of instrumental delivery, including rotational deliveries, utilising both vacuum devices and forceps. He is skilled in external cephalic version for breech presentation, vaginal twin deliveries & vaginal birth after caesarean section (VBAC) management. He performs both vaginal and laparoscopic cervical cerclage, pre-conceptually and during pregnancy, minimising preterm labour. Dr Rowlands has delivered over 9000 babies. He has lectured and taught both nationally and internationally on medical disorders of pregnancy and emergency intra-partum care. He is a recognised Advanced Life Support Obstetrics (ALSO) instructor.
He was the Head of Kaleeya Hospital Obstetrics and Gynaecological Department, Fremantle Health Services, for 7 ½ years, responsible for implementing an elective gynaecological service, as well as medium to high risk obstetrics provision, with a hospital birth rate of 1400 babies per annum.
Dr Rowlands has an extensive fertility background and is competent in all aspects of ART (Assisted Reproductive Treatment), IVF, including controlled ovarian stimulation programming, trans vaginal egg collections, Hy-Cò-Sy, IUI, MESA/TESA & embryo transfer. He has worked alongside Professor John Yovich, the pioneer of IVF in WA, for the past 9 years at PIVET Medical Centre & received additional training/fellowship in endoscopic surgery, culminating in Level 5/6 AGES/RANZCOG classification.
Dr Rowlands has extensive training and over 20 years experience in family planning, offering a tailored approach to contraceptive options, including Mirena, Implanon and sterilisation. He is highly skilled in termination of pregnancy for a variety of indications including congenital abnormalities such as Trisomy 21 (Down Syndrome), and personal circumstances, utilising both surgical methods or medical management (tablets).
